Sewage cleanup
How is a sewage backup cleaned up safely?
Crews in protective suits, gloves and respirators extract the sewage and any standing water, then remove everything porous it touched, like carpet, padding, insulation and the lower drywall. Hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, the area is dried with dehumidifiers and air movers, and only then do repairs begin.

Good to know
What can be kept after a sewage backup?
Hard, non-porous items like metal, glass, sealed concrete and some solid wood can usually be cleaned and disinfected. Porous materials that soaked up sewage, including carpet, padding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, insulation and drywall, generally have to be thrown out, because they can’t be reliably disinfected.
If sewage is backing up
- Stop using sinks, toilets, showers and the washing machine.

- Don’t touch it without gloves and boots, and don’t try to vacuum it.

FAQ
Sewage Cleanup Questions
Why does my basement drain back up in heavy rain?
In many older systems, heavy rain overloads the sewer lines and water looks for the lowest opening, often a basement floor drain. A plumber can tell you whether a backwater valve or other fix makes sense for your line. We handle the cleanup when it happens.
Can I clean up a small sewage spill myself?
A small toilet overflow on tile can be handled with gloves, disinfectant and care. Once sewage soaks into carpet, drywall or a finished basement, or covers a large area, it needs professional extraction, removal of the soaked materials and disinfection.
Is it safe to stay in the house during sewage cleanup?
Usually, if the affected area can be closed off and the rest of the house has working plumbing. Small children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system should stay away from the work area.
Who pays for a sewage backup in an apartment building?
That depends on where the blockage was, the building’s rules and the insurance policies involved, which your managing agent and insurer decide. We document the damage and the work so everyone has the same record.
How long does sewage cleanup take?
Extraction and removal usually happen in the first day or two, followed by several days of drying. Rebuilding the finished areas comes after the drying readings are good.
